What a Blocked Shower Drain Looks Like
A blocked or restricted shower drain does not always fail all at once. It often starts gradually.
You may notice that the water takes longer to disappear after each shower. Then it may begin pooling around the drain. Eventually, water can start rising around your feet while the shower is still running.
Other signs your shower may be blocked include:
- Water sitting in the shower base after use
- Gurgling sounds from the drain
- Unpleasant smells from the waste
- Water draining slower after each shower
- The drain clearing briefly, then blocking again

What Usually Causes a Shower Drain to Block?
Most shower drain blockages build up over time. The drain has to deal with water, hair, soap, shampoo, conditioner, dirt and body oils every day. Even if each shower only leaves behind a small amount, it can collect inside the waste pipe.

Can You Fix a Blocked Shower Drain Yourself?
Sometimes, yes, but only if the blockage is shallow and easy to access.
The safest first step is to remove any visible hair or debris around the drain grate. A basic plastic drain snake may also help if the blockage is close to the surface. Take care not to push the blockage further into the pipe.
You can also check whether the issue is isolated to the shower. Run the bathroom basin, flush the toilet and check any nearby bath or floor waste. If everything else drains normally, the problem may be limited to the shower. If several fixtures are draining slowly, it is more likely to be a deeper plumbing issue.
Avoid relying on harsh chemical drain cleaners. They can be rough on older pipework, may not fully clear the blockage, and can make the job more difficult or hazardous if a plumber needs to work on the drain afterwards.

- The shower base or floor does not fall properly towards the drain. This can happen in older bathrooms, poorly finished renovations or showers with uneven tiles. In that case, the issue may not be a blockage at all. It may be a shower base or tiling problem.
A qualified local plumber can help rule out a drainage issue. If the drain is working properly but water still pools in low spots, a tiler or bathroom repair specialist may also need to be involved.
